Community Build Day 2005

25 Volunteers from Washington Mutual and Countrywide Home Loans came together to revitalize the home of Herman and Julia as part of the 4th Annual Community Build Day on August 13th.

Sponsored by 38 member companies of the Financial Services Roundtable, the Denver project was one of 22 similar projects going on across the country on that day.

Although the day was rainy and cool, the volunteers put in a full day replacing the front door, adding new security locks, handrails for stability, replacing the bathroom sink and tub surround, repairing walls in the basement, and sprucing up the bedroom and kitchen with fresh new paint.

The project was dedicated by executives from the sponsoring companies and the Financial Services Roundtable (shown below) along with local dignitaries City Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth and former Bronco Wade Manning. Former Bronco Odell Barry was also on hand to support the volunteers in their efforts.

Homeowner Spotlight: Community Build Day 2005

Herman (87) and Julia (73) have lived in their home for 40 years. Herman is a veteran of WWII and the Korean War and is handicapped with severe arthritis. He uses a cane and a walker and is visually impaired. His wife Julia uses a cane for stability.

Herman used to do all the home repairs himself, but can no longer physically do them. They were deeply moved to have the help of the volunteers from Countrywide and

Washington Mutual on Community Build Day.

They have been Broncos fans for 30 years, and have a "shrine" to the Broncos in their basement. Having former Broncos Wade Manning and Odell Barry visit them was a also a once in a lifetime experience for this couple. Two amazing events in just one day!

A Home For All Seasons Expands Coverage

A Home For All Seasons (HAS), our year-round program of home repair and modification, has expanded. Now, HAS is helping low-income or disabled homeowners in Arapahoe County as well as in Commerce City and Aurora.

Like all of the revitalization work done by Rebuilding Together Metro Denver, HAS repairs are performed by volunteers at no cost to the qualified homeowners.

Typical repairs and modifications include repairs to inoperable furnaces, broken light switches and outlets, plumbing problems, broken locks and home modifications for handicap accessibility.

For more information on this program or to volunteer contact Angie at 720-524-9205 or by email at angie_rebuild@qwest.net or on the web at www.rebuildingdenver.org/HAS.htm

Now Hiring: Construction Manager

It's with great sadness but best wishes that we recently saw Matt Smith off to a new job back in his home town of Philadelphia. But now we have to replace this very important role of Construction Manager.

If you or someone you know has skills in construction, home repairs and modifications, likes working as part of a team and wants to play an important role in our community, contact Laurie McCaw at (720) 524-0828 or email rebuild@qwest.net
