Welcome to Rebuilding Together Metro Denver's eNews. Once each month we send out news of our programs and the people making it possible. Please forward to friends or colleagues who might also be interested in keeping our neighbors warm, safe, and dry and living in independence.

From Laurie McCaw,
Executive Director:

Our honorable Mayor has proclaimed April "Rebuilding Month" in Denver! I want to thank Mayor Hickenlooper for his recognition of the efforts of many volunteers and businesses that make this event a success every year.

This will be the last issue of enews before Rebuilding Day, 2005, Rebuilding Together's largest rehabilitation event of the year. 32 homes and 1 nonprofit facility will be made warm, safe and dry.

American culture as we know it is often youth-oriented rather than paying homage to those who have paved the road for them. The act of "aging" in our society can be perilous and difficult for many.  The work of Rebuilding Together is really about preserving homes and human lives with dignity and hope, and taking notice of those who rarely complain, but often fall through the cracks. While rebuilding homes, we hope to restore a sense of community and caring for these homeowners.

Each year at this time I take a moment to reflect on the phenomenal contributions by countless numbers of volunteers in preparation of this work. From the kids that have spoken with homeowners and created story boards  to describe life stories to volunteer teams - to the dozens of skilled and house captains working to solidify work scopes and strong teams - to the many vendors and suppliers that have provided us with donated materials and supplies - to the skilled trades that will assist us with electrical, flooring and concrete for ramps and walkways. This is when I watch with amazement - our community rally together to make a difference in the lives of elderly and disabled homeowners that simply want to age in place and live independently with dignity.

Rebuilding Together is able to meet its mission through the generosity of volunteers and contributors. Our work is only made possible because of your support. This will be evident in just a couple of weeks when 32 homes will be transformed throughout metro Denver - mostly in just one day! Some homeowners tell us "it's a miracle" that they have been chosen. Others have said, "I've volunteered all my life and it is so nice to see it is coming back to me". All of them will have a moment when they don't know what to say at all, and will watch and simply be grateful.

On behalf of our staff, homeowners and board, I applaud and express deep appreciation to each and everyone of you that are involved in this effort.

Safety first!

  • 60% of injury deaths are the result of a fall in the home
  • 33% of falls are attributed to environmental hazards in the home
  • 2/3 of people who fall will fall again within 6 months

Rebuilding Month in Denver kicked off April 2nd with the Home Modifications Workshop, a one day technical session on key safety issues. Topics included performing safety inspections, how to build ramps and alternatives to ramps, modifying doorways and entrances, and the right way to securely install grab bars.

Over 50 people attended the workshop sponsored by the Administration on Aging. Attendees included builders, Rebuilding Day skill captains, volunteers and occupational therapists.

Homeowner Spotlight: Living History

The 9th Grade English students at North High School in Denver are learning some interesting things about some of their neighbors.

Student groups interviewed homeowners and created story boards for 25 of our Rebuilding Day 2005 projects. The story boards will be placed at each home on Rebuilding Day and will help volunteers who are revitalizing that home to know more about the family they're helping.

Students do a group interview with two homeowners.
