Welcome to Rebuilding Together Metro Denver's eNews. Once each month we send out news of our programs and the people making it possible. Please forward to friends or colleagues who might also be interested in keeping our neighbors warm, safe, and dry and living independently.

From Laurie McCaw, Executive Director:

Dear Friends,

Can we be well into the second half of 2006 already? Time is flying - at least in part because of how busy things have been this year.

After wrapping up National Rebuilding Day in April, which had a national impact of 8,900 homes repaired by 267,000 volunteers for a market value of $98 million, we moved right on to Community Build Day and now are putting the final touched on our second Fall Rebuilding Day in Denver -- a day that will be 4 times the size, helping 4 times the number of low-income families in metro Denver as last year.

At the same time, A Home for All Seasons, the year-round minor repair program, keeps growing. The work in that program has expanded both in the communities served and in the types of work we can do.

Altogether over 150 low-income households with elderly or disabled family members, nearly 400 people in our community, will live in safer, dryer, warmer homes by the end of this year.

Your support and involvement is what makes this possible. Some of you volunteer your time, your talent and your tools; some of you donate materials; some of you sponsor specific projects; some of you make personal donations. All these contributions are important to the individuals and to the neighborhoods that are impacted.

As Winston Churchill said, "We get to make a living; we give to make a life." All of you have given to make life better for hundreds of our less fortunate neighbors.

Thank you!

In partnership,

Laurie McCaw signature

Countrywide Wraps Up 3rd Annual Community Build Day in Denver

Colorado joined with 45 other states on Saturday, August 5, for Community Build Day 2006. The refurbishing crew in Denver, made up of more than 20 volunteers from Countrywide Home Loans, spent the day repairing and fixing the home of a disabled Denver man.

The scope of work included weatherizing windows, replacing bathroom tile, installing a new rear entry door, painting throughout the house, installing smoke detectors, and repairing two exterior brick porch pillars.

Community Build day, in its fifth year, is a national initiative of the Financial Services Roundtable in Washington, D.C. Congressman Bob Beauprez, a supporter of Community Build Day since its inception, stopped in midday at the "rebuild" site with his wife Claudia to thank the volunteers for making the project possible in Colorado.

Fall Rebuilding Day Welcomes New and Returning Sponsors

With Fall Rebuilding Day just over two months away, the House Selection Committee is busy screening applicants and the Operations Committee is rounding up supplies and materials for a major project day.

Fall Rebuilding Day was introduced just last year, with three homes rehabilitated. This year we will do at least 4 times the number of homes and help so many more people! With much thanks to these and other sponsors:

We are thrilled to welcome back:

Countrywide Home Loans for their 14th and 15th projects (they will be doing two homes in October)

Turner Construction for their 8th home rehabilitation

Cherry Creek Rotary for their 2nd repair project

AARP for their 2nd project

Many of our Fall Rebuilding Day teams will come from new sponsors. So far we are pleased to welcome:

AIMCO

API Energy

HomeSphere

Light of Christ Church

In addition, thanks to the generosity and shopping enthusiasm of those of you who purchased items at our silent auction in April, we will also be doing a "Community House". It is sponsored by the funds raised at the silent auction at the April 2006 Kickoff Celebration and will be staffed with volunteers throughout the community.

Ways to get more involved

If Rebuilding Day isn't enough for you - consider becoming a volunteer for A Home for All Seasons or joining a RTMD committee.

To meet the year-round needs of low-income homeowners A Home for All Seasons volunteers perform safety inspections and minor repairs. It doesn't take a huge commitment to make a difference - just a few hours a month can address the safety repair needs of dozens of homeowners. There is more information on our website at www.rebuildingdenver.org/hfas.htm.

Rebuilding Day couldn't happen without committee support. The House Selection Committee helps screen homeowner applicants for whether the work meets the mission of warm, safe and dry, whether it can be done in a one day project and whether the homeowners fit the criteria of low-income and elderly, disabled or caring for someone with disabilities. The Operations Committee is critical to finding donations and discounts for materials, supplies and skilled time. If you are interested in helping on one of these committees, please contact Joey or Brad at the RT office 720-524-0840.

And finally, a new committee, the Fundraising Events Committee. This committee of board, staff and other volunteers will explore the idea of a "signature" annual event to launch in 2007 or 2008. Contact Laurie to learn more about this.

Accent Windows: 6 Years of Support

"In kind" donors, the people and organizations who donate specialized materials, skills and time, accomplish amazing things.
A supporter of RTMD since its beginning in Denver, Accent Windows has helped stop drafts, reduce energy bills and improve safety for many homeowners by replacing old, broken or inefficient windows. Among the many projects they have supported over the years, Accent installed all new windows for two homeowners as part of their Rebuilding Day projects this past April.
68 year old Martha, whose home was sponsored by Otten, Johnson, Robinson, Neff & Ragonetti, P.C., had serious energy efficiency issues in her home. Utility bills had climbed to an alarming and unaffordable amount and still she couldn't stay warm. New windows from Accent combined with energy efficient exterior doors that were part of the OJRNR team's repairs have her set up for a much warmer and affordable winter at the end of this year.
Maria's home, sponsored by American National Bank, is a busy place. At 65 years old, she has lived in her home for 30 years. She cares for her 42 year old comatose daughter and two grandchildren, ages 10 and 12. Some of her windows had been painted shut for years and both the doors and the windows had large gaps that let out the warm air and let in the cold. The new windows from Accent plus the many other repairs inside and out by ANB have the whole family living in a healthier, safer environment.
