Welcome to Rebuilding Together Metro Denver's eNews. Once each month we send out news of our programs and the people making it possible. Please forward to friends or colleagues who might also be interested in keeping our neighbors warm, safe, and dry and living independently.

From Laurie McCaw, Executive Director:

Dear Friends,

What a wonderful day it was in our community on Saturday, April 29th!

The weather was almost perfect - clear and comfortable most of the day, with only brief light showers scattered around town. Over 800 volunteers worked all day to improve the lives and the neighborhoods for 60 low-income people who are elderly or living with disabilities and one non-profit group home.

Among the happy stories are Reynald, who can now roll in and out of his home on his own, his son no longer has to carry him; and Martha who can look forward to a much warmer winter; and Timothy and Donna who will stay dry with a new roof and plumbing repairs and avoid more accidents from falls with secure handrails; and Alvin, Dorothy and Mae who won't trip over worn out flooring; and Shiloh House that is now set to continue serving disadvantaged young men in safety and comfort.

It can't be said enough - Thank You to all our sponsors who put their names and resources behind these projects. Thank You to the many businesses and individuals who have donated their valuable skills and materials for substantial projects such as roofs and windows. And Thank You to all of our volunteers, without whom we could not provide this service in our community.

In partnership,

Laurie McCaw signature

Experience the sweat and the joy!

These pictures show the astounding amount of work performed by volunteers last month in Denver, Aurora, Littleton, Westminster, Englewood, Arvada and Wheat Ridge. You can see the camaraderie of the teams, the cooperation, the concentration, and the satisfaction of helping our neighbors. On the faces of the homeowners you can't miss the joy and the deep gratitude for the caring and the huge effort made by total strangers - though they weren't strangers by the end of the project!

Please visit the photo gallery at our website to view pictures from nearly all of our 27 projects from that day. You can get to it from the link on the home page or by clicking here.

In their own words - messages from Rebuilding Day 2006 homeowners

Maria: "I cried when I got the message about the windows. No one has ever done something so nice for me as you have."

Shirley: "I did not realize what an emotional toll watching my home deteriorate was taking on me; until so many items were replaced or rendered from their state of ill repair...I would like to say thanks and send love to that wonderful team of volunteers. I have never met so many sweet spirited, giving, and caring people in one setting."

Jay and Lorena: "Thanks for the new furnace..the bathrooms are so nice, and those toilets!..Wow!..Our back step...The roof is so nice. I don't need to worry about rain now and can use the light over the sink...We really enjoyed the crew. Had a wonderful day with them. Couldn't have asked for a nicer group...Just to watch them made me tired..You are such a God-send to us."

Martha: "I would like to thank all of you by name, but I do not have your names... You have made it possible for me to stay in my home that is clean, safe, and warmer."

Margaret: "they [volunteers] treated me as part of a family member, they took the time to explain and show me what they are doing to my house...I can't say enough about all the volunteers as they were wonderful. God Bless the people at Rebuilding Together and these volunteers, with much love,"

Daughter of Curtis and Shizuko: "the generosity of so many people will never be forgotten... with my mother's health condition, it's difficult to find moments of happiness - April 29th was a very happy day for my Mom and Dad - it brought them hope and it made them feel special. Thank you!"

In-Kind ... In-Valuable

While many non-profit organizations receive in-kind donations of goods or services, it truly would be impossible for Rebuilding Together and our volunteer teams to make this kind of difference without this support.

Organizations like the Colorado Roofing Association and Accent Windows, who have provided materials and labor for every Rebuilding Day project since its beginning in Denver, allow us to help homeowners with more complex health, safety and energy repairs on their homes.

The list of in-kind donors for Rebuilding Day 2006 is on the photo gallery page. Please join us in thanking them all for their in-valuable support.

Rebuilding Day will be back this October

Saturday, October 21, 2006 we'll do it all again. A full Fall Rebuilding Day with 15-20 projects with 500-600 volunteers.

Up to 5 of these projects will be "community" projects, with many volunteers coming together and meeting for the first time as they work side by side to help others be warm, safe and dry this winter.

If you or your organization are interested in either sponsoring or volunteering for Fall Rebuilding Day please contact us by email or by filling out a volunteer application at our website.

A Home for all Seasons expands

Rebuilding Together is expanding services in Arapahoe County beginning in June 2006. We have received funding from the county to increase the number of projects to be done in Englewood, Centennial, Littleton and Sheridan.

Beginning in June, we can do more grab bar installation, more handrail repair, more door and lock repair, more safety inspections and other minor repairs and modifications for low-income elderly or disabled homeowners.

Like all our programs, we depend on volunteers to help us stretch the dollars we have and serve more people in need. A Home for all Seasons volunteers usually work alone and need to be qualified to perform minor repairs. Read the Volunteer Home Repair Specialist job description here. Get the Volunteer Home Repair Specialist application here.

If you can donate a day or two a month as a volunteer for this program, or if you know any homeowners in need in Arapahoe County, Adams County, Aurora or Commerce City, please call Angie at 720-524-9205 or email her.
